Ever since the turn of the year, BTS Jimin’s solo debut has been a hot topic in the music world. As days went by, the hype only increased owing to the concept photos, which reflect the phases of the moon. Jimin is lauded for his dancing skills as well as his vocals as a member of BTS. With the rise of BTS’ popularity, the members each got their own space to show their individuality with their music. BTS’ Jimin chose to stick to R&B and hip hop for his solo debut album FACE. He collaborated with pdogg, a longtime friend and music producer of BTS’ songs.
GHSTLOOP, who worked with BTS for their albums like BE and Map Of The Soul: 7 in addition to contributing to the members’ solo ventures also participates in Jimin’s solo venture as a producer and writer. Evan, who contributed to BTS’ track ‘For Youth’ is also a recurring writer in this album. Jimin, of course, gave his all towards his solo debut EP and made his mark felt by writing for each track. Ruuth and Chris James also make their presence felt in the tracks as lyricists. Additionally, for ‘Set Me Free Pt 2’ famous rapper Chancellor steps in for the chorus and Supreme Boi makes a comeback as the lyricist in addition to others.
The album begins with the instrumental ‘Face Off’ where he comes face-to-face with his struggles and fears as he laments, ‘Break it down / This is my usual story / Get it out / Get it out / I'm screaming like crazy’. The trap and hip-hop beats lend a raw appeal to the song, as Jimin comes to a face-off with his inner demons. BTS’ RM pitches in for this track by participating in the songwriting and composition. With ‘Interlude: Dive’, Jimin descends into a scene of retrospection and introduction where he joins montages together of his time on stage with BTS basking in the cheer of the fans to a brisk walk leading out somewhere. All this while, there is hypnotic music playing as if it transports the listener (and Jimin) to a new beginning.
Jimin then resorts to raw and minimal instruments for ‘Alone’. The clock ticking in the background is reminiscent of how time stood still for us during the pandemic. Feeling lost, alone, and disconnected is something all of us went through at that time and the song articulates it perfectly, especially when Jimin croons ‘I've been thinking about what I'm doing/Why is it only me? No, everyone's like that/I'm pretending to be okay every time/I'm so pathetic’. The song is as much a representation of the stagnant time as it is of an individual who feels trapped and stuck at some point in their life.
This ballad is followed by the static-like track ‘Set Me Free Pt 2’. Borrowing from Suga’s song of the same name from his mixtape ‘D-2’ under the moniker Agust D, the song is a bold declaration of Jimin’s break from the clutches of negativity. This idea is reflected in the lines, ‘It's begun, my prime time / Forget, forget / I'll gladly hop on / Now yeah, now yeah / Fly away, butterfly-y-y / Finally free’. Some might even say the song is a nod to references to BTS’ ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ era. He also pays homage to the AAVE community with the line ‘I never stop, fuck all your opps’ and at the same time makes him stand clear about rushing headlong to a newfound path of freedom.
No BTS member will let the fans walk away without a deep embedded meaning in their songs, and Jimin did the same. Jimin graces the screen with Austrian author Rainer Maria Rilke’s lines ‘I live my life in widening circles’ hinting at his breakthrough from the mundane and gaining new experiences each time. Jimin surprises the fans with his rapping skills in this stellar orchestral number. In the digital format, the album concludes with an English version of ‘Like Crazy’.
Those who got their hands on the physical album copies are in for a treat as there is a hidden track ‘Letter’ which begins at the 6.13 mark of the track ‘Like Crazy’ (English Version). The track is also officially credited on the album, and it is Jimin’s love letter to his fans, members of BTS, and everyone who has supported and loved him. Last but not the least, Jimin’s solo debut album ‘Face’ only cemented his reputation as a talented musician. He stuck to the softer genres of R&B and ballad, which bring out his effervescent artistry with a nuanced finesse.
In his interview with Jimmy Fallon, he mentioned how the EP covers his “chronological experiences during the pandemic”. If one were to sit and draw a map of his 6-track EP then one can clearly see the progression of emotions from a seemingly smooth and subdued start with ‘Face Off’ to a burst of rambunctious activity in ‘Set Me Free Pt 2’. While FACE proves that Jimin's solo venture is artistically mature, it proves that battling the inner conflict has led him to new beginnings. He is definitely not alone on this road to finding himself.
