July saw comebacks by groups like NCT 127 and Stray Kids but it also brought a wave of summary freshness. While these major names dropped bangers that caught the attention of everyone and anyone active on social media there were other groups who made a delightful appearance with their music. 1. STRAY KIDS – ‘CHK CHK BOOM’
Korean group Stray Kids has once again proven their dominance in the K-pop scene with their latest album, ATE. Stray Kids have always delivered banger title tracks with each comeback. But there is something about ‘Chk Chk Boom’ (apart from the Deadpool & Wolverine cameos) that just adds a tasteful touch. The members know which moves and tunes to throw around to catch their fans and listeners’ attention. The song is THE war song of assured success and immense confidence if there ever was one! The lyrics are brimming with a strong sense of self and high self-esteem – “I took a step closer/I'm the owner of my goal, lucky to have me as an owner/I make it right zeroing in clear.”
On July 19, 2024, Jimin made a much-awaited comeback with his second album Muse. His sophomore album is a departure from the introspective undertones of his debut, FACE. This time, the BTS member is immersed in a world of love, adoration, and the pursuit of a muse. A late 2000s-inspired track sung entirely in English is just what was needed to showcase a new side to Jimin’s versatility as a musician. ‘Who’ is a track that you would expect to feature in a rom-com, especially something like an SRK-led Bollywood film where the male lead wonders about his lady love – “We never met, but she's all I see at night/Never met but she's always on my mind/Wanna give her the world/And so much more/Who is my heart waiting for?”
NCT 127 dropped their sixth full-length album, Walk. Packed with 11 tracks, it features the title song ‘Walk’ and the pre-released single ‘Meaning of Love.’ The group channels a retro hip-hop charm with ‘Walk.’ The song offers an extended take on the idea first presented in the intro song – “I'm a bit rusty, a bit dusty/I walk like I forgot how to/Don't care 'bout a thing, I just walk how I feel like/Walking squeaky like I'm broken”. ‘Walk’ sports a mix of retro hip-hop beats and some trap as well. The Korean title of the song sounds similar to “Big Dog.” Does this mean that the group is saying that it has now become a big dog, someone with influence and affluence? I say, I agree!
The group is one of those promising rookie groups that stay true to their performance. Their song “Shock” is an energetic blend of hip-hop and rap that cements their position in the genre.
iKON’s JU-NE is a good wordsmith, as we can see from his contribution to iKON’s discography. So it won’t be a surprise when his solo EP is a banger. Some might argue that his solo did not make much waves when it was released, but it certainly a banger to watch out! Junhoe, known mononymously as JU-NE, has made a powerful solo debut with his first album, BRUISE. The title track, ‘Feel Lost’, is a captivating exploration of loneliness and introspection, showcased through a visually striking music video and Junhoe's potent vocals. The song delves deep into the emotional turmoil of isolation, a theme that resonates with many listeners. The accompanying music video is a mesmerizing blend of disco-inspired aesthetics and introspective moments.
