The long-rumored Harry Potter TV series for HBO Max is currently in advance negotiations at Warner Bros. with JK Rowling in talks to join the project as a producer.
According to Deadline, once Rowling comes aboard, the project is expected to look for a writer. As first reported by Bloomberg, the general idea for each season of the potential TV series is to focus on one book in the Harry Potter book series, which consists of seven novels.
HBO Max and Warner Bros. have long pursued a Harry Potter television series. To oversee the Potter franchises, which includes theme parks, tours, and the $9.1 billion-grossing movie library, Tom Ascheim was appointed by Warner Bros. Ascheim became WarnerMedia's primary liaison with Rowling and her team, and discussions for a potential HBO Max series began.
Warner Bros. had previously adapted each book in Rowling’s Harry Potter series into a blockbuster feature, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 and concluding with Harry and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. The eight films reportedly generated more than $7.7 billion at the box office globally.
Despite the end of the original series, Harry Potter remains a significant cultural influence with spinoff films, theme park attractions, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" on Broadway, and the popular video game "Hogwarts Legacy."
