HBO considering Game of Thrones prequel centered on the conquest of Aegon I Targaryen

A Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon the Conquer is in early discussions at HBO.

A Game of Thrones prequel on Aegon the Conquer is on the table at HBO who is “actively discussing” the project. The project currently has no writer and sources say HBO is keen to move forward and get it into development. According to sources, HBO and Warner Bros might create it as a feature film that could serve as an introduction to the possible series. However, current plans are not yet confirmed.

According to Variety, the show would tell the story of how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty.

Those events took place approximately 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones. As the report states, Game of Thrones’ hit prequel series “House of the Dragon” is the only project that was greenlit among numerous others announced over the years. Premiered in August 2022, the series instantly earned a Season 2 following its successful launch. The new season is currently in production.

Variety notes that to date, the only Game of Thrones project that has captured any footage is the Long Night’s pilot featuring Naomi Watts. However, this venture was finally abandoned in 2019 when House of the Dragon was officially greenlit.
