Hollywood actor Henry Cavill, known for his iconic portrayal of Superman, has officially made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Cavill’s surprise appearance as a Wolverine variant in the highly anticipated film, Deadpool & Wolverine, left audiences stunned and excited for potential future developments.
Following the film's release, Cavill took to Instagram to break his silence on his cameo. He shared an image of himself as the Wolverine variant, playfully taking a jab at his previous experience with DC. “To be safe, I shaved the moustache off for this one. Just the moustache,” Cavill wrote, referencing the infamous controversy during the reshoots of Justice League. In 2017, Cavill was contractually obligated to keep a moustache for his role in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. This led to Warner Bros. having to digitally remove his moustache during the Justice League reshoots, a decision that received widespread criticism. Before his brief appearance in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, Cavill’s last significant role as Superman was in Justice League.

The former Man of Steel actor made his unexpected entrance during a pivotal scene where Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool is on a mission to track down Weapon X for the Time Variance Authority. In a dramatic twist, Cavill’s Wolverine variant, dubbed “The Cavillrine,” attacks Wade Wilson. The scene was made even more notable by Deadpool’s direct acknowledgement of Cavill, humorously referring to him as “The Cavillrine” and jesting that he would treat him “so much better than those s--t f--ks down the street.” This line was a clear nod to Cavill’s tumultuous history with Warner Bros. Discovery and his tenure as Superman.
While it remains unclear whether Cavill’s appearance is a one-time cameo or the beginning of a more extended role within the MCU, the actor’s entry into Marvel’s cinematic universe has already sparked widespread speculation and enthusiasm among fans.
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy shared insights into the origin of this unique moniker of ‘Cavillrine’. “If we're going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillrine, which Ryan coined,” Levy said in a recent interview with Variety. “I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term. He said 'yes' right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he's appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.”
Deadpool & Wolverine marked the return of Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. The film was released on July 26, 2024.
