Jeremy Renner is gearing up for his first interview since his critical snowplow accident. In a new preview for the upcoming interview titled Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph, the Marvel actor reflected on his injuries and emotionally recalled his physical and mental state of mind.
A new preview for the interview shows Jeremy speaking about his pain and tearfully remembering apologizing to his family in sign language after the accident. “All of it,” Renner tells Sawyer when asked how much of the pain he remembers. “I was awake through every moment.”
Renner was run over by a snowplow vehicle on New Year's Day in Nevada. He suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital. The actor was reportedly trying to help his nephew out of the snow when the Sno-Cat crushed him. He underwent multiple emergency surgeries following the incident.
He was discharged after two weeks and is undergoing physical therapy. “I see him in a pool of blood coming from his head,” Renner’s nephew tells Sawyer. “I ran up to him. I didn’t think he was alive.” The teaser for the interview also includes a 911 call in which the actor is heard moaning in pain as people tell him to “keep fighting.”
Sawyer is also seen noting the long list of Renner’s injuries which include “eight ribs broken in 14 places. Right knee, right ankle broken, left leg tibia broken, left ankle broken, right clavicle broken, right shoulder broken. Face, eye socket, jaw, mandible broken. Lung collapsed. Pierced from the rib bone, your liver — which sounds terrifying.”
Renner further recalls the time when he thought about his injuries following the incident, “What’s my body going to look like? Am I just going to be a spine and a brain, like a science experiment?” While being interviewed, the actor maintains a calm and composed attitude, but when Sawyer mentions that the actor communicated to their family using sign language, saying “I'm sorry,” he briefly becomes emotional and sheds tears.
“I chose to survive. That’s not gonna kill me, no way,” he says. “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.” The teaser also features footage of Renner’s physical therapy.
