SM Entertainment’s newest K-pop group RIIZE [Shotaro, Eunseok, Sungchan, Wonbin, Seunghan, Sohee, and Anton] has finally dropped their first mini-album, RIIZING! This exciting release marks a major milestone for the seven-member group, showcasing their growth and musical versatility. Formed in 2023, RIIZE quickly captured hearts with their debut single ‘Get a Guitar’. The song's catchy melody and infectious energy set the stage for a promising career. Throughout the year, they continued to impress with a string of singles, each one demonstrating their unique sound while staying true to SM's signature style of innovative and trendsetting music. Now, in 2024, RIIZE raises the bar with RIIZING. This eight-track mini-album offers a diverse musical journey, featuring the title track ‘Boom Boom Bass’, pre-released singles, and some of their earlier hit tracks.
1. BOOM BOOM BASS
‘Boom Boom Bass’ serves as the title track to RIIZE’s first single album RIIZING. The song captures the group’s novelty on a sonically diverse tapestry, showcasing a new side to the group’s artistry. The members’ harmonious Acapella-like vocals in the chorus showcase that they can rise above singing just a vocal or a rap verse. This song is all about the members claiming their fun and enjoyable take on making music.

‘Siren’ is a through and through hip hop and rap track. The track boasts of a sonically diverse set as the group proclaims its indelible unique mark in the K-pop music scene. Like a siren that is heard far and wide, RIIZE is here to be heard for times to come. The music landscape in this track is a heady mix of hip-hop, trap and electro-pop which grows on the listeners with each passing minute.

‘Impossible’ is one of the most energetic tracks on this album. The members sing about achieving new heights and success while at the same time expressing their gratitude for their fans, BRIIZE (fandom name). The track boasts an infectious energy as we see the members dance their hearts out to the upbeat melody.

‘9 Days’ is a track about rising one’s past self. The song comes as a message of hope and resilience to rise even if one falls. The dance-pop elements in the song create a funky fusion of hip-hop and R&B as the group dances their days celebrating and affirming their success.

5. HONESTLY
After a round of upbeat tracks and powerful anthems comes a sombre R&B ballad ‘Honestly’. The track speaks about a heartbreak that left a lasting impression but now the protagonist is free of the past memories. ‘Honestly’ sports sharp instruments which highlight the stark emotions presented in the lyrics. The vocal harmony softens the blow of these raw and heartbreaking lyrics.

6. ONE KISS
‘One Kiss’ is quite the romantic number when you look at the lyrics. The song is yet another R&B addition to RIIZE’s musical roster. This track serves as a perfect fit for a rom-com. The innocence of the song is further highlighted in the music video where we see members going about their vacation days and yet not forgetting to express the tender emotions in the song. It only goes to show how serious the love is when the person is not out of mind at any time of the day.

7. TALK SAXY
‘Talk Saxy’ is a vibrant blend of jazz and pop infused with RIIZE’s seductive vocals. The song’s musicality is in stark contrast with the rest of the album for it incorporates a carefree vibe with its lyrics. The music video is straight out of a retro presentation, with the song title presented in a bright light bulb presentation as the members display a suave presentation of their dance skills.

8. LOVE 119
RIIZE’s first mini-album concludes with ‘Love 119’ one of RIIZE’s most popular tracks since the group’s debut. The song is a fun take on the rising and confusing emotions about love and romance. 119 is the emergency number for medical services in Korea, and the lyrics have smartly incorporated the number to signify the severity and intensity of emotions that need to be checked immediately.

The only thing that is relatively new in this album is the title track ‘Boom Boom Bass’. Listening to the pre-release singles and other previously released tracks does not create excitement for the songs that have been long heard and danced to. It would have been better if this mini-album sported just the title and the pre-release singles, for it could have served as a fresh new entry to RIIZE’s musical foray in 2024. RIIZING could mark the conclusion to establishing RIIZE’s initial identity as a new and unique K-pop boy group.
Another thing to note in this album is that most tracks are under three minutes. For a group that promises something new and exciting to the listeners, it would have been great if they presented songs longer than a minute or two. In a world chasing viral moments and fifteen minutes of fame, it is but a welcome change to see songs that retain their flavour long after they have been released.
