True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto joins Marvel's Blade as writer

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has signed on to write the screenplay for Marvel Studios’ Blade. The writer will reunite with Mahershala Ali who starred in the third season of his HBO crime series.

According to Variety, Blade boasts Oscar winner Ali as the title vampire slayer, with Aaron Pierre, Delroy Lindo and Mia Goth among the starry cast. Pre-production on the film is underway, with Pizzolatto working from a draft of the script by Michael Starrbury.

The film, which has been said to be “darker than most MCU movies,” most recently added Goth and Lindo in the cast. Blade, a character created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in 1973 for The Tomb of Dracula No. 10, is a half-mortal, half-immortal vampire hunter seeking revenge for his mother's death.

Wesley Snipes played Blade in a trilogy of horror action thrillers produced by New Line Cinema in the early 2000s. In 2019, Marvel Studio chief Kevin Feige announced at Comic-Con that Mahershala Ali would star as Blade.

Blade has been scheduled for release by Marvel on September 6, 2024. The film is expected to begin filming in late May in Atlanta.
