Korean actor Wi Ha Joon has been on an acting high with a slew of memorable deliveries across genres. He got the viewers to cheer for him when he was the desperate Hwang Jun Ho in Squid Game, he made a mark in Bad & Crazy as the eccentric alter ego K, and he even got the viewers to fawn over him in Little Women as Choi Doil. In the recent past, Wi Ha Joon has chosen roles which are morally grey in nature but make the viewers cheer for him the loudest. Meanwhile, actor Ji Chang Wook, after leaving the viewers with a bittersweet heartache in Lovestruck in the City, returned briefly to the drama If You Wish Upon Me opposite Sooyoung. Ji Chang Wook’s return to the K-drama scene has to be a memorable one and that is what The Worst of Evil is. It is a drama that compels you to side with the negative character and yet wants to side with the good one.
Both Wi Ha Joon and Ji Chang Wook make a compelling case as their characters cross paths in The Worst of Evil. The drama premiered on September 27, 2023, on Disney+Hotstar. The first three episodes gave a glimpse into the impending doom set in motion for both the leads. While the story deals with the spread of the drug mafia in South Korea in the 90s, it also throws light on the casualties that happened because of the warring parties. The drama shows how the men are caught up in a fight which spirals beyond their control. It shows the collateral damage that is caused because of a conflict of ideals between two individuals. This conflict is not just fueled by business morals, but it is also fueled by love and a sense of security towards a woman. The Worst of Evil is an apt title for a show that portrays how bad evil can be, literally and figuratively.
Ji Chang Wook plays the role of Park Jun Mo, who is a rural detective and is looked down upon by the family members of his wife Yu Eui Jeong (Im Se Mi) who are all police officers in different ranks. His wife is a Narcotics officer in Seoul. The story begins with Jun Mo unable to move forward with his promotion due to his father’s past history with drugs. However, an opportunity arrives for him when his senior asks him to go undercover and find his way to join Gangnam Union, a crime gangster group led by Jung Gi Cheol (Wi Ha Joon) who is a distributor of methamphetamine in Seoul. Posing as Jung’s best friend’s cousin, Jun Mo finds his way to join the union only to uncover more secrets about Jung and his wife’s past as well. This sets up a robust crime saga and a larger plotline at stake which intertwines the lives of Jun Mo, Gi Cheol and Eui Jeong.
The amount of violence portrayed in the film is not for the faint of heart. If you want to have a look into the underbelly of the Korean mafia then The Worst of Evil is a must-watch drama for you! Speaking of the shoot sequence and style, it is as muddy and gritty as it gets. The makers remain true to the real muddied nature of the mafia and reflect the nitty-gritty bits as close to reality as possible.
The Worst of Evil follows the classic K-drama narration style where you are first brought to the present event and then rushed back to the past, a time when the drama first started to unravel. Even in that past, the further past of the characters is shown to give more depth and a clearer understanding of the character. Like a spool of threads that simply keeps on unravelling when pulled once, this K-drama leads to several short yet impactful past instances which were instrumental in the characters’ current way of being.
The mental war between Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha Joon’s characters is definitely the highlight of the show. However, Wi’s character has more scope to unravel as it seemed in the first three episodes, that his character was underwritten though his performance is power-packed and nuanced. Im Se Mi’s character also seems someone who will play a major role in upcoming episodes but yet is to be fleshed out. However, Ji and Wi go head-to-head in this gangster saga. The two powerhouses are already compelling the fans to choose a side. Episode four of The Worst of Evil will air on October 4, 2023.
