2012: Krish in London
Character Sketch
Krish is your regular college student studying at Nottingham University and living the campus life. He studies by the day and works part time at a coffee shop. His clothes are very easy and are never planned. He never bothers how he looks before he gets out. He just wears whatever is in front of him. His demeanor, body language and choice of clothes are slightly more on the casual side. It is more dress down than dress up.
Styling
What I love about Krish's clothes is that it is very free and comfortable. You have fashion pieces put together in a very personalised and unique way. He picks up individual pieces from high street fashion stores, puts them together and wears it however he feels. He always has some second layers that he wears. He has a couple of hoodies, jumpers and over shirts that stand out strong. He wears a lot of graphic tees, cargos and has got a couple of really interesting shorts. I love his pair of glasses and backpack. He even has a lot of colourful sneakers and his slip on shoes that are really comfortable and are perfect for university wear.
Colour palette
You see him wear a lot of faded and lighter denims. This is the only segment where Shahid is seen in denims. He wears slightly duller inners and slightly brighter outers. We used a lot of blue, black, khaki, lemon yellow, etc. -

Hair and stubble
The longer hairstyle was a collective decision. The slightly longer hair and stubble brings out the heroism of Javed.
Accessories
He has a taweez on his arm, which he wears inside his sleeve. He also wears a thumb ring, the back story of which is that he could have stolen it because it is a real silver ring that I don't think Javed would own or buy. He also wears religious threads on his right wrist in a blue black colour.
Inspiration
It was my version of how I would see people in Lahore in 1910. There is no inspiration as such. The inspiration was actually my discussions with director Kunal Kohli on the character of Javed. Using Javed's personality traits as a guideline we have tried to show his traits in his clothes. He is not a heavily accessorized character, he is not somebody who is out there to make an impression, he doesn't even dress to the occasion, he just dresses as himself.
Kunal's Pick
His hand stitched leather mojris are very nice. It is something that even I am taking from the movie. Mojris are something that go well with all Indian looks and are very authentic. -

1910: Javed in Sargoda, a village near Lahore in undivided India
Character Sketch
Javed is a very free spirit and is the most heroic character out of the three. He is somebody who does things first and thinks later. He is slightly cocky and is a heavy womanizer. He is a very bold character and is somebody who wears his heart on his sleeve. He doesn't follow rules, fashion and trends, and dresses like he wants to. Since he is an Indian in 1910, during the British Raj, he is a little rebellious and that is something that I have tried to get across in his clothes too.
Styling
In those days there weren't any fashionable clothes stores. Fashion was constrained to what your local darzi could do. The fabrics we have picked up for Javed are slightly different. His gets his outfit cut in the way he likes and he chooses the colour himself. He tweaks his pattern to the level that the local darzi could, so he cuts off his sleeves and rolls them up. He has four buttons but he never uses them as he is somebody who takes good care of his body and wants to show that to the girls. Silhouette wise, Javed wears pathanis when he is out. His footwear is restricted to his mojris and rubber chappals. When he is at home he wears a shorter kurta. Everything made for Javed is hand stitched and that adds a lot of uniqueness to his garments.
Colour palette
His colour palette is nothing dramatically exuberant; it is just brighter vegetable colours that we used to get in those days and also some warmer tones. In 1910 there was no electricity so we chose garments and colours that would look good with natural light like torches, marshalls and gas lamps. My favourite colours on him in the 1910 chapter are his mustard pathani and his black pathani. -

1960: Govind in Bombay
Character Sketch
Govind plays a struggling musician who is trying to enter the film industry. Govind does not have too much flair and his dressing style is more understated. He is aware of what the film industry was in those days so he takes some inspiration from the 60's icons.
Styling
We people from the fashion industry love the 60's and the trends that came out from the 60's. The things that are considered fashion today were actually correct clothing for the time that they were in. If you don't wear a hat when you get out of the house then you are naked. It is a very proper and formal era. Suspenders, hats, pleated pants and slightly higher waist pants are a big trend that came from the 60's. Govind is somebody who wants to make an impact without trying. He has a very unique demeanor about him and his clothes fit into his demeanor.
Colour palette
The colours we have used are basic warmer tones and fashion colours from the 60's. We have used colours like dark brown, khaki, olive, white, black and a lot of maroon.
