The inside story
Research and detailing are a part of every film, especially if the film is set in a particular era. Sudhir Mishra talks about the minute details that went into the making of the film along with interesting facts about the film.
Rare artifacts
“I met Daboo Kapoor (Rajiv Kapoor, Raj Kapoor’ son) who gave us access to a lot of photographs. The Kapoors are very warm and genuine people. They love movies and also the people who make films about movies. There are many of my friends who have been around and whose parents have been in the films during the 60’s. They all gave us access to personal photographs. We also met a whole lot of people of that time, some not so famous like assistant directors, writers, cameraman, producers, spot boys, etc.”
The location
A major part of the film is shot in Goa. But Goa as the location for a period film? doesn’t that surprise? “Goa has some houses that were so spectacular that you feel like shooting in them. There was this house in particular that we went to, which in the film represents the house of a yesteryear actress who is married to a rich man of that time. This man becomes like a godfather to the character played by Soha Ali Khan. That’s where Shiney and Soha’s character secretly meet. Those days you couldn’t meet in public places. That house was so spectacular that we went and shot in Goa. You try as much as you like but that particular house is a very expensive house and you can’t replicate it because every artifact, furniture is something you cannot duplicate.” -

The magical era
Sudhir Mishra is all set to bring to you the enchanting era of cinema from the 60’s. His film Khoya Khoya Chand will take you behind the scenes and unfold the magical story of the forgotten era. “. I love the world of movies at that time. I think the directors, the actors, actress all of them were wonderful. They put their lives on the line every time they made a film. They had no other option in life other than being in the movies. There was no show; there was no fashion, no endorsement and no branding. They were just pure movie people who loved the movies. I am not making any sleaze show or a peek into somebody’s personal life. I am talking about that time. It’s about movies then and movies now. It’s about people who want to follow their dream”. -

Khoya Khoya Chand
The film which is based on the captivating era of cinema of the 60’s was earlier titled Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan and then later changed to Khoya Khoya Chand. Sudhir reasons out the change in the title “The earlier title reminded people of my film Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi because its part of the same couplet to Ghalib. A lot of people thought that it was a kind of a sequel. But this is a totally different film. It’s a much more romantic film based in the film industry. It’s about two young people. It’s about the wild world of films in the 50’s. It is a love story and a complicated film about ambition. The theme of the film is that it is better to die dancing than to live a life of mediocrity. Maybe this world of movies, passion and ambition will kill us, but its great and its magical and that’s why we are here”.
And what about the new title Khoya Khoya Chand? Does it imply about dreams and reaching the stars. “Well the title Khoya Khoya Chand implies that much of our motivation is stars and to shine in the memories of people by becoming kind of immortal. That’s the main passion of the people who want to be in the movies and be creative by stamping themselves in the memories of people even when they are gone”. -

The stars
The film will see a combination of talent and beauty with Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan playing the lead as Nikhat and Zaffar respectively.
Soha
“Soha plays a young girl. You will see her in the beginning of the film as a young eighteen year old girl, with her mother trying to get her into the movies. She catches the fancy of a big superstar of that time who sort of gives her a break in films. She also gets involved with him and then she is in his control. Then she bumps into this writer who is arrogant but is hugely talented. She encounters this kind of a man for the first time and that kind of opens her up. Then it’s about their complicated journey in life.
Shiney
Shiney plays this young writer who becomes a director. He teaches Soha that you don’t have to be grateful. You are where you are because you are talented and serve a function and are useful in the films that you do. Shiney’s character doesn’t want to be here particularly, he doesn’t follow the law of the film industry. He is not a chamcha as they say. He is working purely by his talent. And in the accident called life he makes it big because he is very useful to people and corrects their films and finally becomes a writer much in demand.
Sonia Jehan
The film also will see Sonia Jehan (who made her debut with Akbar Khan’s Taj Mahal) playing a superstar of the 60s. Sonia is a half Pakistani, half French actress. Sudhir seems to be quite impressed by her performance. “Sonia is the great Noor Jehan’s granddaughter. She has a connection with that time because of her grandmother. She even understands that time and the movies. She plays a superstar in the film. It’s a very brave and slightly controversial part. She is stunning and looks likes a superstar of that time. She is amazingly talented and is very good in the film. So are Rajat Kapoor, Sushmita Mukherji, Saurabh Shukla and Vinay Pathak who is normally associated with comedy roles. There is a whole bunch of very good actors.” -

Waheeda Rehman’s guidance
When you are making a film at such a big level it becomes very important to get the role right. In the film Soha had to go through some rigorous training, learning Kathak and Urdu. And as Sudhir Mishra would put it “Nothing can be an accident everything has to be designed”.
“Soha’s role is of an eighteen year old who is a young starlet trying her best to get into movies and then she becomes a superstar. Her whole journey is very difficult. As she is an actress, she has to do a lot of dancing and singing. She is not only playing the part of Nikhat, the character in the film but is also playing other characters within the film. We spoke to Waheeda Rehmanji who I think is the most brilliant actress ever and a great lady. We spoke to her about her time and she told us a bit about the movies of that time”.
