Bujji & Bhairava gives an idea of the world of Prabhas-Deepika Padukone’s Kalki 2898 AD in an entertaining manner; also has a Hera Pheri connection

en Bollywood News Bujji & Bhairava gives an idea of the world of Prabhas-Deepika Padukone’s Kalki 2898 AD in an entertaining manner; also has a Hera Pheri connection

The much-awaited film, Kalki 2898 AD, is all set to release in less than a month and the excitement is already tremendous. Last week, the makers had an interesting event in Hyderabad where they introduced the fifth important character of the film – a robotic car named Bujji. Today, the makers released a two-episode animated series on Amazon Prime Video named Bujji & Bhairava. It’s the first time in Indian cinema that an animated prelude has been unveiled to the public before the release of the live-action feature film. Thankfully, it turns out to be an entertaining fare.

Both episodes of Bujji & Bhairava are 14 minutes each and are fast-paced. The animation is appealing. Rajan’s character looks quite similar to Brahmanandam. The first episode at the very start introduces Bujji, an AI bot that works for an elite section of the society named Complex. She is on her hundredth mission and is all set to get a promotion. Things, however, go awry for her.

The focus then shifts to Bhairava, a fearless, bindaas chap who also dreams of being a part of the Complex. However, he’s penniless and tries to earn his living by being a bounty hunter. Circumstances bring Bujji and Bhairava together. In the second episode, both become a team and how that happens forms the rest of the episode.

Bujji & Bhairava serves its purpose as viewers get to know a lot about life in 2898 AD in Kashi. The rich reside in the Complex while the poor in the lower part of the city. The currency is simply called ‘unit’. Cashless transactions have reached another level. A certain section of the poor people has not even seen pineapple. This means that many are living an unhealthy life. This is also indicated by the fact that old people can be seen breathing through an oxygen cylinder. Also, a man on the street can be seen selling oxygen cans.

On the flipside, a few aspects are not properly explained, like who are the rebels from Shambala, whose statue is being built in Kashi and how Bhairava is so well-known among the residents. Moreover, not everyone will know what ‘bounty’ is and the makers should have simplified it. This is crucial as Kalki 2898 AD is meant for all kinds of audiences, including the lowest common denominator. Also, there was a lot of scope for humour. But a few bits are surprising as well. For instance, a bespectacled man on the street talks like the iconic character of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte from Hera Pheri series!

The voiceover is satisfactory. Mohak Ninad is fine as the voice of Bhairava. But since Prabhas plays this role in Kalki 2898 AD, one would have expected Sharad Kelkar to do the needful. Keerthy Suresh is superb as the voice of Bujji.

On the whole, Bujji & Bhairava is a must-watch before watching Kalki 2898 AD. In 28 minutes, it packs in a lot and also provides ample entertainment.
