Filmmaker Anil Ravipudi is looking extremely confident in his film F3, a standalone sequel to the 2019 blockbuster film F2: Fun and Frustration. F2 starring Venkatesh, Varun Tej, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Mehreen Pirzada in lead roles is the biggest hit of Ravipudi’s career. “I am very confident because I am not telling the same story. Everything is on a much larger scale because people will compare F3 to F2 as F2 is the biggest hit in my career. People will come with that expectation. Since the day I started working on the script, I took utmost care whether it is the character or the making; I wanted to take it to the next level and it is definitely going to entertain the people more than F2,” says Anil Ravipudi to Bollywood Hungama ahead of the release of the film.
WORKING WITH VENKATESH AND VARUN TEJ-
F2 is a film about two men who hope to control their wives. However, their chauvinist attitude lands them in trouble (often hilarious). Talking about F3, Anil said, “This time there are more relatable points compared to F2. The husband and wife theme is somewhat only relatable to the married audience. But money connects with everyone; from 10th class boys to 70-80 year men also connect with the theme of money. We thought every day everyone is running behind money, some want more money and in the process, some look for shortcuts and go to any extent to get money. Such kind of greedy characters are there in the film. Venkatesh and Varun are greedy people and Mehreen and Tamannaah are even more greedy."
Not only is Anil Ravipudi confident about the film but said that the entire crew is confident about the film and it reflects in their performance. “Venkatesh and Varun had great bonding while they were working on F2. So when they came for F3 they were already charged up. They are very confident because F2 was a huge hit. Even when they would come to the sets as well they looked confident and energetic. The friendly nature and bonding between all artists, made them work as a family. Everybody has the confidence that we are delivering another blockbuster because we did better than F2 in performance, look, timing, and every other department,” he said.
Anil also credited Venkatesh for making everyone comfortable around him. “He will give competition to all youngsters. Everybody loves him. He is like 30-35- years old. His age never reflects on-screen or off-screen as well. He is a positive soul and he spreads that positivity in him to everybody. It is easy to work with him. That's why he has done more number of multi-starrer in the Telugu industry. He is always friendly with everyone. Venkatesh gives that comfort to everyone so it's easy for other actors also. Varun also became very good friends with Venky sir. That is why everybody delivered great performances. This time every artist performed top-notch; it was next level.”
EXPLORING FEMALE CHARACTERS IN COMEDY-
F2 is also one of those rare films where lead female actors also get to do comedy. Talking about the same, Anil revealed that he also gets complaints about there not being an asana for women to release their frustration. For the unaware, Venkatesh’s character’s Venky asana became quite popular after F2. Post that Anil received complaints regarding why there is no asana for women as they, too, get frustrated. “So I promised that in the next film I will definitely find one asana and definitely I will give it because, from childhood, I grew up in a joint family. There were so many women around me like my mother, grandmother, and others. So I would simply observe their behaviour and their mindset. Unknowingly while I am writing all of these influenced me. So that is why in my film women are a little natural. They look a little negative but at the end of the day, they will be very positive because you cannot calculate women,” he said.
“Women are always a question mark. You cannot analyse them. You can’t give a proper solution for them. They are all always a question mark. Only then life will go on otherwise if you get an answer you will get bored. That's why I always try to explore women characters in a funny way. In a funny way, I will explore, and at the same time, I give a proper solution and proper ending to them. In F3 also, Tamannaah has an edge to perform, in the first half Mehreen has the edge, while in the second half Tamnannah has the edge. So this time, not like in the flow, in each portion one actor will take lead,” he added.
WRITING FOR COMEDY-
The thing about comedy is that not every joke can make everyone laugh. Different jokes work on different people, depending on various factors such as geographical location, age, gender, mindset, culture, and many more. So how does one write for comedy in changing times while catering to a massive audience. “An auto guy will laugh at one kind of joke, and one corporate employee will laugh at one kind of joke. Their taste depends on their mindset. So you can’t expect one joke to connect with everybody. In the film, we have all kinds of jokes. One joke will connect with one kind of audience and the other will connect with another set of audience. Depending on how large an audience the jokes connect with, the film will be a success. You can't judge comedy. While writing also we don't know how many jokes are going to work out in the auditorium. That's why we fill it up with all kinds of jokes in all kinds of scenes and see in the auditorium which scene will work and which scene won't work and it depends on the auditorium."
Anil also feels that the jokes in his films don't misfire as he knows what he wants. Explaining his process, the writer-director said, "I am very clear on what I want. I will act and show what I want. Basically, for every character, while writing I will also give body language to the character and I will act first and check if it is working or not. Only then will I execute it on screen. So definitely whether 15 or 30 artists (in the scene), I will go and explain to every character in depth the kind of body language that is required. It then becomes easy for me and them also to perform."
F3, directed and written by Anil Ravipudi, was released in theatres on May 27, 2022.
