Filmmaker Nag Ashwin’s ambitious futuristic sci-fi saga Kalki 2898 AD is going great guns at the box office, not just in India but also worldwide. Along with Prabhas, who plays a bounty hunter, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, the movie also stars debutant Humhu. He plays the role of fellow bounty hunter Krane, who is on the opposite line of Prabhas.
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Humhu shared his experience of working in the film with big stars and also threw light on the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD.
Interestingly, his selection process was quite simple for such a big movie. “It was a fairly simple and swift process,” he said. “They reached out to me directly on Instagram, I sent my audition tape and I received my confirmation call within an hour.”
Humhu’s character Krane has a lot of action scenes in the film. “There was a lot of action rehearsal before the final takes,” he said. “I was also doing a lot of gymnastics training at the same time, which helped me in the action sequences tremendously. And of course I trained myself in a little bit of spoken Telugu with focus on colloquial accents.” He also added that he has dubbed for the Hindi and Telugu version of the film.
Humhu had quite a few scenes with Prabhas. He was bowled over by the star’s humility. “I feel very fortunate to have shared screen space with the legendary Prabhas,” he said. “He personally gave me tips in the action sequences on how to make it look real and convincing. He didn't have to, but he did it in goodwill and brotherly spirit. I finally understood why they call him ‘Darling Prabhas’. I will always remember his kindness.”
Humhu was also amazed at how Deepika Padukone made efforts to kill his nervousness. “It was a wonderful and fulfilling experience working with the iconic Deepika Padukone. On the first day of shoot with her, in my heart I was completely fanning out and crushing on her. But on the outside I was trying to act all professional and I was also a little nervous. I guess she caught on to that and cracked a joke to ease the situation out. She made me feel very comforted and assured. She's a delight both on and off screen.”
In a recent exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, actor Anil George, who plays Bani in Kalki 2898 AD, said that he often received his lines on the sets during the shoot. But Humhu said that he was given a good amount of time to prepare.
“Well, I would receive my script beforehand but there were often changes on the set. I was given ample time though to do homework and rehearsals with the dialogues. The whole experience of the shoot for me was very transformative and uplifting because I was full of fear and doubts when I started. It was my director Nag Ashwin and the wonderful crew who instilled a lot of trust and confidence in me. This project made me believe in my own talent and capabilities. I'm forever grateful to Vyjayanthi Movies for this opportunity of a lifetime,” he said.
Kalki 2898 AD ends by promising an interesting sequel. Humhu is hoping and keeping his fingers crossed to get a substantial role in the second film as well. When asked the status of the sequel, he said, “A lot of the shoot is completed, most of it is yet to be shot.” And whether part two will be more explosive? “Most definitely,” said Humhu and signed off.
