The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has initiated an investigation into the filming of the Malayalam movie Painkilli, produced by renowned actor Fahadh Faasil, following reports of disruptions at Angamaly Taluk Hospital in Ernakulam. The Commission's action comes after media reports highlighted the adverse impact of the film shoot on hospital operations and patient care.
Case Registered Against Fahadh Faasil's Film PainkilIi
On Friday, the Commission registered a case on its own accord based on these media reports. Commission member V K Beenakumari has instructed the Ernakulam District Medical Officer and the Superintendent of Angamaly Taluk Hospital to submit an explanation report within seven days.
Disruptions in the Emergency Wing
According to the Commission, the film crew's activities in the emergency wing of the hospital caused significant distress to patients. The statement from the Commission noted, "The film crew dimmed the lights and imposed restrictions in the emergency room, with about 50 people, including actors, present during the shoot. It is understood that the shooting of the movie took place even while the doctors were continuing treatment."
One of the critical concerns raised was the limitation of space in the emergency department. "A patient who came in with a critical condition could not even make it to the emergency department. No one was allowed through the main gate. The crew was instructing the patients and bystanders to keep quiet during filming," the Commission stated. The disruption lasted for two days, severely affecting the hospital's ability to serve its patients, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
The Commission also noted that the hospital was depicted as a private institution in the film, which might have further implications regarding the permissions and protocols followed for the shoot.
Response from Health Authorities
In response to the incident, State Health Minister Veena George has asked the health department director to explain allowing the film crew to shoot in the emergency department of Angamaly Taluk Hospital. This directive underscores the seriousness of the matter and the potential repercussions for hospital administration and film production protocols.
The Commission awaits the explanation report from the concerned authorities.
