Nelson Dilipkumar, the director of the blockbuster film Jailer, has addressed the criticism that the film's story is similar to Kamal Haasan's blockbuster film Vikram. In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Nelson said that he had conceived the story of Jailer long before Vikram was released.

He said that he had told the story to Lokesh Kanagaraj, the director of Vikram and that Lokesh had told him that there were some similarities between the two films.

He asserted, “I told the story of Jailer to Lokesh a long ago, and he asked me to see Vikram. He told me these are the things in the film, and I told him maybe the take-off might be similar, but Jailer goes on a different tangent. I didn’t consciously do it, but if they end up being similar, I didn’t want to change anything… because if we change something it might lead to some problems somewhere else (in the script). I thought people would enjoy both as long as they were good. Vikram was released last June, I told the story last January.”

Jailer is a masala film that tells the story of a retired police officer who goes on a mission to save the life of his son. The film stars Rajinikanth in the lead role. Meanwhile, Vikram is a neo-noir action thriller that tells the story of a former black ops agent who is investigating a series of murders.

Both Jailer and Vikram have been critical and commercial successes. Jailer is currently the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
