The Malayalam film industry continues to grapple with a growing number of sexual misconduct allegations that have surfaced in the wake of the Hema Committee report. Following the forced resignations of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman Ranjith and actors' Association general secretary Siddique, actor Minu Muneer has come forward with her own harrowing experiences. In a Facebook post, Muneer claimed that she was subjected to harassment by four actors – Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu, and Jayasurya – during the shooting of a 2013 movie.
According to Indian Express, Muneer, who has accused multiple actors, including a two-time CPI(M) legislator, of physical and verbal assault, has vowed to file a complaint with the state police team investigating the revelations from the Hema Committee report. One of the most serious allegations involves a prominent actor who allegedly attempted to assault her at a hotel during the shooting of Calender (2009) and Nadakame Ulakam (2011).
“He entered the room and pulled me down on the bed, saying that I would have to consider those who have to be considered for getting better chances,” Muneer recounted. “Later, I left that place.”
Muneer also recounted an incident from 2008 involving actor Jayasurya. She claimed that Jayasurya had kissed her from behind and invited her to his flat, which she declined.
The allegations extend beyond the initial wave of revelations. Muneer’s allegations against Idavela Babu, a prominent leader of the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA), are particularly disturbing. She said that when she applied for membership in AMMA in 2013, Idavela Babu invited her to his flat under the pretext of helping her with the application. However, while she was filling out the form, he allegedly kissed her on the neck. “I ran out of the flat,” she said. “I did not get the membership either.”
The experiences, she said, forced her to leave the Malayalam film industry and relocate to Chennai. “I am now seeking justice and accountability for the sufferings and trauma I had endured,” she added.
The actors who have been named in Muneer's allegations have yet to publicly respond to the specific accusations. However, one of the accused, Maniyanpilla Raju, has called for a thorough investigation into the matter. He contends that various vested interests may be driving the accusations against him.
