Manisha Koirala is a renowned Bollywood actress who has contributed significantly to the Indian film industry. One of her notable works includes the 1995 Hindi-Tamil film, Bombay, directed by Mani Ratnam. The film explores the communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya, India. However, recently, Manisha spoke about the film and proclaimed that she did not want to do the Arvind Swamy starrer.
It all happened during her interaction with the YouTube Channel O2 India. The veteran actress said, “I didn’t want to do Bombay. People had warned me against doing the role of a mother, but cinematographer Ashok Mehta ‘fired’ at me saying ‘do you know the level of good work Mani Ratnam has done? You are an idiot if you refuse his film.’ That jolted me, and mom and I went to Chennai and did a look test. I am really happy I did Bombay.”
For the unversed, in Bombay, Manisha Koirala played the role of Shaila Banu, a Muslim woman who falls in love with a Hindu man, Shekhar, played by Arvind Swamy. The film's story revolves around their relationship and how it is affected by the communal tensions in their city. Manisha Koirala's portrayal of Shaila Banu was exceptional, and her performance was widely appreciated by audiences and critics alike.
Coming to the professional front, the 52-year-old actress was last seen in Shehzada helmed by Rohit Dhawan, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon. She will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum-opus web show Heeramandi. Though the release date is yet to be announced, it will stream on Netflix India.
