Music composer AR Rahman has once again captivated the music industry's attention by bringing back the voices of two dead singers, Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed. Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Rahman recreated their voices for the song 'Thimiri Yezhuda' in Rajinikanth's upcoming film Lal Salaam. While Rahman sought permission from their families and compensated them for their contribution, this innovative move has sparked a debate online.
The announcement was made by Sony Music, South on Monday via their official X account, heralding the return of Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed's voices in Thimiri Yezhuda from Lal Salaam.
In a subsequent post, AR Rahman emphasized the importance of obtaining permission from the singers' families and ensuring appropriate compensation for using their voice algorithms. He shared his belief that technology, when used responsibly, can enhance artistic expression rather than pose a threat.
We took permission from their families and sent deserving remuneration for using their voice algorithms ..technology is not a threat and a nuisance if we use it right…#respect #nostalgia ???? https://t.co/X2TpRoGT3l

The decision to digitally recreate the voices of deceased singers has generated mixed reactions on social media. While some laud Rahman's innovation and respect for the artists' contributions, others question the ethical implications and authenticity of using AI to replicate human voices. The debate reflects broader discussions about the intersection of technology and creativity in the entertainment industry.
