Several allegations have been levelled against prominent figures from the Malayalam film industry, where many have been accused of sexual assault and abuse by either co-stars or aspiring actors. Senior actor Siddique, who is known for his character roles and playing antagonists in several films, resigned as the general secretary of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) on Sunday after similar accusations were thrown towards him. The actor has issued a statement stating that he has submitted the resignation to AMMA president Mohanlal and the vice president Jayan Cherthala too has confirmed the same.

Siddique issues official statement of resignation

In his statement, actor Siddique said, “I have conveyed my resignation to the president of AMMA Mohanlal. I have taken the decision in the light of the allegations raised against me. It’s not fit for me to continue in that post. I would not like to talk about the allegations right now.”

Accusations of rape

A young actor alleged that Siddique sexually assaulted her during her early days in the Malayalam film industry after which she approached the HEMA Committee for justice. The actress said, “I had dreamed big when I came into the film sector. He invited me to a hotel room on the pretext of discussing a film project. I had only a professional approach. But I was trapped and he sexually abused me. It was rape… He slapped and kicked me. I had to run away from there. He is a number one criminal. I was kept away from the industry on account of this incident. He has a different face today. These people lie towards themselves. If he stands before a mirror, he can see a criminal.”

Furthermore, she also revealed that some of her friends have to undergone similar experiences with the actor. “Some of my friends too had similar experiences with him. We look forward to the Hema Committee report. What is important is the next step. We hope the government will give priority to this,” she said.

Last week, Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra too made similar allegations against Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith and accused him of misbehaving with her in 2009.
