SS Rajamouli says Vijayendra Prasad is working on script for RRR sequel

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is enjoying the glorious stint of his movie, RRR. Starring Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt, the film released in March 2022. According to the Bollywood Hungama box office report, the film made a lifetime collection of Rs. 274.31 crores in Hindi. While the film is winning accolades in the West and has been nominated for several prestigious awards shows amid the Oscars 2023 buzz, Rajamouli is teasing that work on the sequel has begun.

While the sequel wasn’t on the cards, the massive success of RRR not just in India but internationally has made it possible. “When we were making it, we didn’t have an idea about [a sequel],” Rajamouli told Variety. “With the initial success of it, we discussed a little bit and threw out some good ideas, but we didn’t feel there was a great idea that was worth pursuing, so we left it at that. Then, after the international success, when the topic came up again, my cousin [M. M. Keeravani] — who is also a part of my core team — gave an idea which we felt like, ‘Oh my God, this is a great idea. This is the idea that is worth pursuing.’”

SS Rajamouli said that his father Vijayendra Prasad, who has always written scripts for Rajamouli, is currently working on the RRR sequel script. “At present, he’s seriously working on the story; he’s getting it done,” said Rajamouli. “But once this script is done is when we really look into how to make it, when to make it, and how to bring it onto the screen.”

Earlier last week, the film was nominated in four categories at the 6th Annual HCA Awards, organised by the Hollywood Critics Association. The categories include Best Director, Best Picture, Best Action Film and Best International Film. The film has also received nominations in two categories for 2023 Golden Globes. The film has been nominated in the Best Picture – Non-English Language category. The second nomination is for the RRR song “Naatu Naatu” in the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category.

Meanwhile, RRR has also been submitted in 15 categories for consideration for Oscars 2023. The categories include Best Motion Picture, Best Director (S.S. Rajamouli), Best Actor for Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, Best Supporting Actor (Ajay Devgn), Best Supporting Actress (Alia Bhatt), Best Original Song for ‘Naatu Naatu’, Best Original Screenplay (S.S. Rajamouli, V. Vijayendra Prasad, Sai Madhav Burra). Best Original Score (M.M. Keeravaani), Best Film Editing (Sreekar Prasad), Best Sound, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects.

Recently, SS Rajamouli was announced as the winner of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Director. The film also received the Best International Picture award at the Atlanta Film Critics Circle.
