Talking about the shooting of the song 'Aaj Dil Gustak', DOP of the film Laxman Utekar explains, "We had planned the song well in advance, storyboards and all. I am glad that in the final product, each and every frame looks like a picture postcard." We have to give it to him, the song has been shot beautifully.
Pre-production seems to be the new buzz-word in Bollywood. The trend is catching up as a new breed of filmmakers is increasingly devoting more and more time to pre-production, which basically comprises of the scripting and storyboarding of a film.
Says Anthony D'Souza, the director of Blue, "It's not just me. These days a lot of directors are working with storyboards as it helps put their vision on paper." And reduce costs, if we may add.
Bollywood Hungama got its hands on a few storyboard sequences from underwater adventure Blue. Here they are; the images and the story behind them.
Besides making the film look really good, Anthony's extensive story boarding also helped him pitch the film. Lara Dutta says, "When Anthony approached me for the first time, he was well prepared with detailed story boards and a bound script."
While the director's level of preparedness coaxed Lara to get on board the project, she was also delighted to find out that an entire song featuring her and Sanjay Dutt had already been put on paper, frame-by-frame.
The storyboards also came in handy during the underwater shoots. A whole fight sequence (seen above) was choreographed before the shooting even began.
Not that the storyboards were always followed to the T. Says Anthony, "Me and my action director made several storyboards for the bike chase in Bangkok, but found them useless after we visited the actual location. We had to redo the boards overnight."
