Indian filmmakers are always edgy about churning out films based on controversial subjects. But not Bollywood's ace director Priyadarshan, who has given hits like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Garam Masala, Hungama …to name few, has now delivered an action thriller based on honor killings called Aakrosh. Apart from its thrilling plot, what makes it so unique is the 225 visual effect shots delivered by Mumbai based VFX house Pixion.
Produced by Kumar Mangat, the film boasts of an impressive cast of Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Reema Sen and Bipasha Basu.
Be it chroma shots of the by-now-famous train sequence or the wire cleanups of Ajay Devgn hanging with the rope, there were many exhilarating scenes. And interestingly, a major chunk of these shots had major visual effects work that made audience gape in awe.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Pixion's Naveen Paul, the VFX Supervisor of the film shared, "Priyadarshan is a veteran director. He is clear with his ideas and exactly knows what he wants, which made it easier for us to execute the project". Talking about the most challenging sequence, he said, "By far, the most challenging scene was where the actor gets hit by the jeep in the chase sequence. For carrying out the pre-visualization process, we had to figure out the shooting process of the scene. It was challenging sequence in terms of pre-production and planning". -

Script and Pre-Production
The subject of the film is based on a true story that revolves around the orthodox acts of honor killings that takes place in modern society. For the film the vfx team was given the task of executing a few action sequences with Ajay Devgn and the supporting characters of the film. Naveen indicates that although the film was based in the state of Bihar, the entire film was shot in Tamil Nadu in South India. Going with the narrative of the script, the team had to recreate few locations that were used for filming.
Since the film was based in Bihar, elements of the southern state were tailored to fit the narrative of the film. Naveen met Priyadarshan and planned out the individual sequences involved in the action scenes. They planned out the scenes meticulously to ascertain the different layers and shot requirements for executing the action shots. Some of the action sequences were shot on set at the film city in Mumbai.

Roof chase sequence
To carry out the scene where Ajay chases the villain on the roof top, the team shot the live action layers in Karaikudi. Sabu Cyril, Art Director of the film recreated the roofs involved in this shot where the actors hop from one roof to another, which was shot on the sets in Film City, Mumbai. The live plates that were in the Karaikudi shots were used in extending the set. Matte paintings and CGI elements were made as well to replicate and give the scene more depth. The different layers of the shots made, were later merged in the composite stage which made this shot seamless on screen.
